I have to say, Gelato Messina is the closest thing in Sydney to the real thing. It wins hands down on range of flavour, taste and authenticity. Absolutely love the fact that it's a casual, walk in store that delivers great flavour & service, without being pretencious like some of the other places out there that focus on image and hype. I talso doesn't hurt that they are so accessible across the road from my favourite italian restaurant La Tavola.
Sensational value for money with 1 scoop for $3.90 and two for $4.90 of this wonderfully delicious premium ice cream. They also rotate their ice cream flavours and are always experimenting which is fabulous, so even the most frequent customers are bound for a delectable surprise.
Firstly, an admission. I actually went back to Messina twice in two weeks with two separate groups. That's how desperately addicted I was to try the peanut butter ice cream. I'd missed out on it the week before when I had a sample from V, but I wanted a whole scoop for myself! So far we have tried the poached fig in syrup, the mango, peanut butter/peanut brittle, coconut and lychee, salted caramel, lime cheesecake and passionfruit ice creams. They have all been fantastic - different, some heavy and some light and refreshing, but all equally delicious. Definitely the best gelato in Sydney, even better than Dolce & Gelato in Newtown.
PS: We just happened to be watching the shop next door making some sort of icing when we realised it was actually for a gelato ice cream! The chef brought out a gelato cake and started sculpting the icing on it. That was a great surprise.
